US Soccer Player Development Model

The US Soccer Player Development Model is designed to help youth soccer coaches and soccer clubs raise the level of play across the country. It focuses on creating more positive, player-centered learning environments by becoming aware of the capabilities and aspirations of their players at each stage of their development. The model emphasizes the importance of meaningful soccer games and soccer-related activities to unlock the potential of young players. It is a complementary publication to the U.S. Soccer Player Development Guidelines, providing knowledge needed to pass on the beautiful game to the next generation.

  • Holistic Development: Focus on the physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of player development

Soccer Pathway

A league is not a pathway - player development is.

Grand Valley Soccer Association (GVSA) , West Michigan’s premier development league, focuses on meaningful growth and competition, building strong foundations for players and teams. In today’s youth soccer landscape, leagues such as MLS NEXT, ECNL, ECNL Regional League, and National Academy League are often viewed as “pathways,” but in reality they are competition platforms or brands. A true pathway in soccer begins with understanding a player’s goals in the sport and recognizing those goals naturally evolve over time. GVSA focuses on building strong foundations for players and teams through quality coaching, meaningful competition, and a promotion- and relegation-based structure that rewards development and performance. For many players, GVSA provides the right environment to grow, compete, and enjoy the game. As goals change, opportunities may evolve, but players and families should always prioritize the environment that best supports development rather than focusing only on league brands.

  • A player’s pathway should start with their goals in the sport, which often change over time.
  • Leagues and platforms are competition environments, not the pathway itself.
  • GVSA supports development through competitive structure, including promotion and relegation.
  • Families should focus on the right environment for growth, not simply the brand of a league.
